About Me

Welcome to my practice

I’m Dr. Vicki Putz, a psychoanalyst and licensed clinical psychologist. I welcome your curiosity in an in-depth approach. Your questions are a good starting point and can lead to suprising discoveries from the beginning. I look forward to the possibility of speaking with you.

My Approach

While I have experience with numerous therapeutic modalities, I’ve found that psychoanalytic work is the most effective path to more meaningful and enduring change—particularly Jacques Lacan’s ideas about the profound way the structure of the unconscious can determine our way of being in the world. What does this mean for you? It means our work together won’t focus solely on symptom relief or quick fixes (though we’ll certainly address immediate concerns). Instead, we’ll explore the underlying patterns that shape your experience, leading beyond just new behaviors to a more fundamental change in how you relate to yourself and others. I believe the most transformative work involves helping you discover the limitations of “answers.” Instead, I facilitate your engagement with the rewarding process of self-inquiry and liberation from hidden familial and societal constraints.

Professional Background

I hold a doctorate from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (now William James College) and a certificate in psychoanalysis from the Massachusetts Institute of Psychoanalysis. My clinical foundation also includes training in diverse approaches in cognitive and behavioral approaches, and time-limited therapy. I teach courses in psychoanalytic technique and Lacanian theory at the Massachusetts Institute of Psychoanalysis. As an educator, I find deep fulfillment in mentoring emerging clinicians. My teaching philosophy emphasizes creating a collaborative learning environment where candidates can explore complex theoretical concepts while developing their own clinical intuition. This educational work complements my clinical practice, keeping me engaged with evolving perspectives in the field while contributing to the development of the next generation of psychoanalytically-informed practitioners.

Beyond Psychology

My perspective has been enriched by education outside traditional psychology. I hold a Masters of Fine Arts in addition to my doctorate in psychology, and I continue to work with various creative mediums in my personal practice. This creative background informs my clinical work in unique ways— particularly in how images intertwine with language, and how we might question problematic norms of meaning-making that can limit our sense of possibility.
